LAPLACE, LA. – Born and raised in the heart of Laplace, Louisiana, Dayna James has embarked on a remarkable journey from the medical field to becoming a successful entrepreneur. Married to Chadwick James Sr., with four children, Dayna’s story is one of perseverance, faith, and community impact. Dayna’s career began in the medical field, where she worked tirelessly as a home health aid and CNA, eventually transitioning to a role in ICU. However, her world was turned upside down when, while on maternity leave, she learned that her job had been eliminated due to a company buyout. Reflecting on this pivotal moment, Dayna recalls feeling a mix of shock and determination. “You work hard and give your all, only to have your job disappear overnight,” she shares. “But I knew I couldn’t let this setback define me.” With the support of her family and faith community, Dayna began exploring new opportunities. Despite feeling uncertain and out of her comfort zone, she took a leap of faith and started an in-home daycare business. However, it wasn’t long before she realized that her true calling lay elsewhere.
James’ decision to venture into entrepreneurship was influenced by her family history, particularly the entrepreneurial spirit of her uncle and grandfather. Her uncle, Curtis, was one of the few Black Barbers in St. John the Baptist Parish during a time when Black representation in businesses was scarce. Observing his impact on the community sparked a curiosity in James about her own potential as a business owner. Additionally, her grandfather’s endeavors in property investments and employment at Shell refinery planted the seeds of entrepreneurship within her.
It was a chance conversation with her beautician that planted the seed for Dayna’s next venture—transportation services. Recognizing a need in her community, she transformed her in-home daycare into a transportation company, aptly named “Home Away From Home.” Starting with just a minivan and a handful of clients, Dayna’s business quickly gained momentum. “I poured my heart into every aspect of my business,” she explains. “From caring for the children like they were my own to ensuring their safety and well-being on every journey.”
Despite facing challenges like Hurricane Isaac and her husband’s injury, Dayna remained steadfast in her commitment to her business and her community. Fortunately for James, damage to the family home was minimal. However, the storm caused significant damage to her parents home resulting in her parents need to relocate to her home. As James considered the next step in growing her business, her mother, who prayed every morning, came out of her room and shared a word from the Holy Spirit which James admits she didn’t want to hear at first. “My mom said I got a word for you.” She shared. “The Holy Spirit told me to tell you to get the 15 passenger van and it will lead you to what you want, which is the Tahoe.” James’ decision to follow the words of faith from her mom led to an approval of the 15 passenger van which then became two vans and 40 kids.
Word of mouth soon became Dayna’s most powerful marketing tool, as satisfied clients and community members spread the word about her exceptional service. Through her involvement in economic development and tourism initiatives, James discovered the power of networking and community engagement. Attending events and joining organizations like the local Chamber of Commerce provided her with invaluable connections and insights into the business landscape. By actively participating in these platforms, James not only promoted her own business but also contributed to the economic growth of her community. “I was honored to serve as a trusted transportation provider for families across Laplace,” she shares.
James’s was also faced with the loss of her mother. However, through faith and the support of her community, she found the strength to persevere. The mission was clear: to work together and support each other’s businesses under the umbrella of a United Front. Despite facing obstacles in marketing their business, James remained undeterred, taking each day as it came. She shares, “The obstacles were getting my name out there, but without any training or teaching how to, that was me. That was one of the issues, problems, or whatever you wanna call it that was there.”
One of the key factors in James’ success was her commitment to excellence, a value instilled in her by her pastor. She believed in delivering top-notch service to her clients and ensuring that her business operations reflected the highest standards of quality. This commitment not only helped her in marketing her business but also earned her the trust and loyalty of her customers. Furthermore, James has a deep passion for giving back to her community and helping others succeed. She acknowledges the importance of supporting fellow entrepreneurs, regardless of their background, saying, “We promised that when God blesses us with the right position, we will share everything we learn with others.”
Through it all, Dayna’s dedication to her mission—to nurture and protect the children in her care—remained unwavering. “It’s not just a job for me—it’s my calling,” she emphasizes.
As Dayna reflects on her journey from home health to entrepreneurship, she remains grateful for the support of her community and the opportunities that have come her way. “It’s been a journey of faith, resilience, and growth,” she concludes. “And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Dayna James’s story serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere, demonstrating the power of faith, determination, and community in achieving one’s dreams. As she continues to make a positive impact in Laplace and beyond, her legacy as a local business leader and advocate for children’s welfare shines brightly.
