Noah Powell: Making Money Moves Through His Music

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Noah Powell’s aspirations were brewing by the minute. Coming from a long line of musicians in his family, it was only a matter of time before Noah Powell hit the musical scene as a rapper and music producer.  At nine years of age, he was exhibiting many musical talents such as beatboxing, drumming and writing poetry with only a pen and paper. “Writing to music was something that I always wanted to do since I was at a young age,” Noah told BLKPreneurship. “Music was always a part of me and who I am as a person.”

His family had a huge impact on Noah’s dreams of becoming a music producer and rapper. Powell’s mother was a prolific singer, having Noah do rap performances when he was only seven years of age. His father was a music artist who revolutionized the hip hop genre during his prime. His great uncle Brauss Townsend was a world famous jazz musician. However, when it came to what inspired Noah to rap, it had to be from his older brother. When Noah was young, they would freestyle to hip hop beats within the basement of his home, and they were able to form a formidable bond through their unique use of lyricism. As with any rap artist, Noah had to overcome the many dangers and hurdles that the hip hop industry brings.

Powell had to deal with a fair share of deaths within his family. Noah’s late father and brother passed away from gun violence, which shook Noah to his core mentally and emotionally, causing him to start dealing with depression. However, Noah took these distractions and used them as fuel for his music to heal himself from the grief. “I used my music as an escape for me,” Noah said. “Life can hit you like a ton of bricks, but you have to decide whether you continue living out your passion or not. My family lived and died through music, and I want to do this for the family members that are not here anymore.” Noah uses the stress of life and death to fuel his passion through his music.

Eventually, he wanted to become a mainstream music artist after finding out the power that his lyrics bring to people around him. However, even though he had the ample amount of tools to write lyrics, he was lacking the other part of the spectrum; The software.

Before he knew it, Noah was able to find the right software to help achieve his dreams. Noah knew that behind every word he tells can be exasperated with a strong and potent beat that not only captures his listeners, but enthralls them as well. “When I was old enough to touch a computer, I ran with it.” Noah said. “On top of writing to my music, I love to produce and play around with the beats as well!”

One thing that Powell learned throughout his career is his strong mentorship ability. Noah always stresses to one of his younger cousins who is also a budding rap artist, to “enjoy the journey.” He understands the fact that even though he had to overcome such a harsh reality of losing both of his loved ones, he had to keep pushing forward for their sake. “There is beauty in the struggle to success” is the motto that he lives by, which would help him through the hardest of times in his career that eventually landed him to perform live shows in many different states.

Noah is all about supporting others, so he loves to give back to other fans and artists in any capacity. Even though Powell wishes to give back to his fans through merchandising and other perks, he receives validation through giving advice to other artists. Noah was able to inspire a particularly new rapper by telling him a few tips and tricks on how to enhance his lyrical ability. “When I was 19 years old, I met an aspiring rap artist after a show I did. The guy explained how it was his first ever show and any advice that I had for him would be appreciated.” Noah explained. “Even though we never met, we had a genuine connection to where I was giving him a few pointers on how to improve the verses on his music. After that day, we never looked back. 4 years later, he improved in spades and he thanked me for such life-changing advice. I want to help people like that.”

Noah sees these smaller successes as stepping stones to even bigger ones. He believes that the impact that he brings upon both fans and other artists alike is more than what money can buy.
