A contract renewal for SWAC Commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland has been unanimously approved by the Council of Presidents and Chancellors of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
The extension was made public on Friday afternoon and will extend until the 2032 academic year.

“Over the course of the past five years the Southwestern Athletic Conference has made significant strides towards becoming one of the most widely recognized and visible athletic conferences in the country,” said SWAC Council of Presidents and Chancellors Chairman Quinton T. Ross Jr., Ed.D.

“The visionary and dynamic leadership of Commissioner McClelland has helped propel our conference to prominence on a national stage while also increasing the availability of financial resources that have positively impacted the overall student-athlete experience. We are undoubtedly excited about the continued upward trajectory of our league under his leadership.”

In the summer of 2018, McClelland was appointed as the sixth commissioner of the SWAC. Since then, conference football and basketball games have been televised on ESPN and HBCUGO platforms, greatly enhancing the league’s visibility and prominence on a national scale.

This past season, league football events attracted an unprecedented amount of viewing, with the majority of conference games being available to fans via streaming internet platforms and conventional broadcasting.
Every year, McClelland’s dedication to the league’s overall financial health acts as a crucial strategic focus point in the Conference Office. His leadership has enabled its members to carry out a number of initiatives that have significantly improved the league’s financial situation overall.
Another important area of focus for the Conference Office and league membership is the enhancement of the overall student-athlete experience at conference-sponsored championship events, which has been made possible by these creative financial and fundraising initiatives.

McClelland recently finished a five-year term as a member of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee in addition to his responsibilities at the league office. Among the high points of his committee tenure were his 2023–24 season as committee head. His appointment made him the first representative of an HBCU league or organization to hold the esteemed position of chair of the committee.
